To celebrate the launch of the 2016/17 season and the opening of the Donny Dog’s Kennel, I was given the task of creating large scale graphics for the family concourse area of the stadium.
I needed to produce large-scale graphic instalments that would engage the fans, with the primary goal of elevating the match day experience for young fans and their families. To achieve this, I used popular Rovers’ players such as James Coppinger (captain) and Andy Butler as well as the team’s mascot, Donny Dog.
The artwork needed to interact with the existing structure of the stadium. I needed to give the impression of players/ mascots leaping out from behind pillars or bursting through walls and kicking their way across the space.
My first step was to draw the players in Adobe Illustrator. I selected an image of the legend James Coppinger and begin to digitally trace it using a child friendly cartoon approach.
However, this was a major problem as all the images were from the previous season and therefore he is wearing last season’s kit. I would need to superimpose the new kit when creating the artwork. I used the kit launch images as reference to create the player wearing the new kit.
